Visual artist Michelle Markson and registered psychotherapist Andrea Foster are opening the door to the benefits of creative expression with a new art therapy workshop.

The unique six-week program, Creative Journeys, is for those 18 and older who have been impacted by childhood trauma, traumatic grief, trauma in the line of duty, and other traumatic experiences. “We are creating support and reducing isolation,” says Foster.

Canada is far behind other countries when it comes to art therapy, according to Ali Giedraitis, founder and president of 5th Street Creative Initiatives in Collingwood, the registered charity that is providing the art supplies and funding the workshops.
“This is an effort to awaken the possibilities in each person,” says Giedraitis.

The workshops build on the idea that creativity and mental health are connected and that visual arts can provide a means of expression. Whether it’s drawing, painting or sculpture, Markson will help guide the small group through a creative process. “Our plan is to have a number of different mediums available,” says the artist.

The workshop will also delve into some of the different aspects of trauma, including the physiological effects on the body and nervous system, emotional responses and coping strategies.

Foster says support from friends and family, physical activities and the pursuit of happiness through the arts and cultural interests can all help build resilience. “Things to be active with and participate in,” explains Foster. “Those individuals typically do better post-trauma than individuals who don’t have a supportive system.”

Each two-hour session costs $40.00. Additional funding may be available to those facing financial barriers. To register email info@blueoaks.ca or call 705-444-0381.
