The ship was built in the Collingwood shipyards and launched on January 11, 1974. Since then, the MS Chi-Cheemaun (“big canoe” in Ojibwe) has safely transported millions of people, their cars and supplies across the 45 kilometres of open water between Tobermory and South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. Activities on board the ferry include guest speakers, live music and historical displays. The annual spring repositioning cruise on May 2nd kicks off the 2024 sailing season with a four-and-a-half-hour voyage between Owen Sound and Tobermory. The Chi-Cheemaun Festival takes place June 14 to 16, 2024.
