The 900 Block of 1st Avenue East in downtown Owen Sound has been wonderfully revitalized. Once forlorn, the heritage riverside location is now a welcoming community space. A broad pedestrian walkway provides safe accessibility to the banks of the Sydenham River, enhanced by a diverse array of native trees, benches and tables.
“It promotes healthy physical activity and connection to nature while creating many opportunities for community engagement,” says Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy of the multi-year revitalization plan.
The ongoing transformation is the result of the city’s Downtown River Precinct Initiative which aims to redevelop the urban core in harmony with the natural environment.
The first phase of the project was completed in 2019 with the renewal of 1st Ave East between 8th and 9th streets, including the Owen Sound Farmers Market. The four phases of the riverbank revitalization are scheduled for completion by fall 2028.
“By revitalizing our core, we are setting the stage for a dynamic and resilient economic future for all Owen Sound residents and businesses,” says Diane Austin, CEO of the Owen Sound & District Chamber of Commerce.
Many area business owners corroborate Austin’s optimism. Cathy Den Tandt and Miguelle Mann are the business partners who operate Riverside Yarns.
“Once, the back end of our shop was dark and shabby, but now we have big plans to enhance our customers’ shopping experience by opening up an appealing back entrance,” explains Den Tandt.
“We will have new signage at the back and a welcoming bench and bright paint to entice pedestrians to drop in.”
